About M. (Marienke) van Middelkoop, PhD

Introduction

Dr. Marienke van Middelkoop is a human movement scientist and employed as an associate professor at the Department of General Practice.

She received her PhD in 2008 on the subject ‘Running injuries’ at the Erasmus MC Medical University Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

As a postdoc researcher, she wrote several systematic reviews on the treatment of low back pain and neck complaints.

In 2013 she continued her work as an assistant professor at the department of General Practice and since 2017 she is employed as an associate professor with a main research focus on musculoskeletal complaints in the young patient in primary care.

Her research activities have, since 2005, led to over 130 international peer-reviewed publications, with an H-index of 28. She was twice awarded with a EUR Fellowship (2011 and 2017) with the aim to unravel the aetiology of musculoskeletal complaints in children and adolescents.

She is currently the project leader of multiple PhD students and is the coordinator of the Osteoarthritis (OA) Trial Bank, an international successful ongoing project including a databank of more than 60,000 OA patients. She is a deputy editor of British Journal of Sports Medicine and in 2010 she was selected to participate in the Oxford International Primary Care Research Leadership Program.

Other positions

Dr. M van Middelkoop is Deputy Editor for the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Moreover, she is a member of the Knowledge Transfer Sports Medicine expert group on running, a steering member of Platform Monitoren Sportblessures (Sport Injury Monitor) and a member of the scientific board of the association for podiatrists.

Scholarships, grants, and awards

She has received multiple grants as a PI (>€2 million) of Arthritis Association, Netherlands Institute of Health Science and Development, Anna Fonds and Royal Dutch Society for Physical Therapy.
