About P.K. (Koen) Bos, MD, PhD

Introduction

I am an orthopedic surgeon with scientific interest in biological solutions for treatment of degenerative diseases, such as osteoarthritis. I obtained my PhD under supervison of prof van Osch and prof Verhaar in 2006 with basic research in cartilage biology and cartilage wound healing and repair. I work together with Gerjo van Osch in basic science and mesenchymal stem cell preclinical research, with Sita Bierma on several clinical osteoarthritis projects and with the radiological department (dr Edwin Oei) on imaging of musculoskeletal tissues and innovative pain treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee.

Clinical focus is on revision surgery for hip implants, including treatment for bone loss, implant infection, antibiotic studies and joint registry data analysis. My scientific research is focused on osteoarthritis (OA) and joint degeneration. Early treatment for children and young adults is aimed at stopping the OA disease process, reducing symptoms and improving function. The majority of patients I treat concerns late stage OA of hip and knee and involves joint replacement and revison of arthroplasties caused by loosening and (severe) bone loss or prosthetic joint infection. Several projects related to infection and implants are coupled to my clinical work.
